Transport and trade unions have called for a Bharat Bandh on 26 February i.e. today to protest against the rising prices of petrol and diesel. 40,000 traders associations have given their support to Bharat Bandh. Apart from this, several agricultural organizations opposing the Farm Law on Thursday decided to support this Bharat Bandh.

The All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC), the apex organization of transporters, said that the prices of petrol and diesel were continuously increasing. Apart from this, high rates of tax, many things related to e-way bill and current policy of junk of vehicles etc. were discussed in the Governing Council of AIMTC.

The Confederation of All India Traders (CAT), a traders’ association, said the All India Transport Welfare Association, representing one crore transporters, supported the bandh. The hawkers’ joint action committee, the national organization of hawkers, has also supported the shutdown. However, other merchant organizations such as the Federation of All India Trade Chambers and the Bharatiya Udyog Vyapar Mandal said that they are not supporting the bandh.

CAT general secretary Praveen Khandelwal said that 1,500 big and small organizations from all states will protest against the GST amendment. He said that essential services such as chemists, milk and vegetable shops have been kept out of bandh. VK Bansal, national general secretary of the Federation of All India Trade Chambers said that in favor of some demands we are not in favor of closing shops. However, we believe that GST has deviated from its original objective during the last 43 months. Rakesh Yadav, general secretary of the Indian Industry Trade Board, Delhi said that we are not supporting the bandh. He said that his organization has submitted a memorandum to the government on issues related to GST.
