A UK court will give its verdict today on the extradition of wanted diamond businessman Nirav Modi to India in connection with a fraud of nearly two billion dollars from Punjab National Bank. Nirav Modi is currently lodged in a London jail.
49-year-old Nirav Modi is expected to appear in Westminster magistrate court via video link from Wandsworth Jail in south-west London, where District Judge Samuel Gooji will deliver his verdict that the diamond businessman has a case to appear before Indian courts Or not.
The magistrate’s court verdict will then be sent to Britain’s Home Minister Preeti Patel for signature. However, on the basis of the verdict, either side is also likely to do so in the High Court.
Nirav Modi was arrested on 19 March 2019 on extradition warrant and was involved through video link from Wahnsworth jail during several hearings in connection with the extradition case. Many of his attempts to bail have been rejected in the magistrates’ court and the high court. Because he is at risk of absconding.
He will have to face criminal proceedings under the cases registered by the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate in India. Apart from this, some other cases are also registered against him in India.
