Skyroot Aerospace: Skyroot Aerospace created history by sending the country’s first private rocket Vikram-S into space on Friday. The country’s first private rocket has been successfully launched into space. And with this, India’s space program, which had been controlled by the government and financed by the Indian government, started moving into the private sector. The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) launched the Vikram-S rocket from the Satish Dhawan Space Center in Sriharikota. The rocket is launched into space with three customer payloads reaching an altitude of over 90 km.

The Vikram-S rocket reached a maximum altitude of 89.9 km, achieving a speed of Mach 5, five times the speed of sound, according to private firm Skyroot Aerospace. Skyroute Aerospace claims the launch vehicle has met all mission parameters. The company also said that this cleared the way for Vikram-I next year. After the Vikram-S rocket launch, Pawan Kumar Chandanam, co-founder of Skyroot Aerospace, said, “We have created history by launching India’s first private rocket. It signals the new India and the #beginning of an extraordinary future.”

But while the launch was a demonstration mission, it was a full-scale subcontinental launch for the agency. It aims to further strengthen India’s private space sector. The mission proved the technology, engine, and design of the Vikram rocket, capable of launching heavy payloads even in low Earth orbit.

The company is developing a total of three variants of the Vikram rocket, named after Vikram Sarabhai – the father of the Indian space program. While Vikram-I can carry 480 kg payload from low earth orbit, Vikram-II is being developed to carry 595 kg cargo. But the most powerful is going to be Vikram-III, which can be launched from 815 kg to 500 km low inclination orbit.

This mission brought India’s space program into the private sector, similar to that of the US, Europe and China. Vikram-S, developed by Skyroot Aerospace, provided expertise and facilities to test ISRO’s technological developments right there.

The country’s first private rocket launch made it clear that it is not just about developing or designing vehicles. It will also be able to attract more customers to invest in this sector. Because till now this sector was only dependent on government money. More recently, ISRO and INSPACE have been working closely with private companies to provide expertise and technical know-how on the complex design of a rocket system as India opens up the space sector to its private sector.

Union Minister of Science and Technology Dr. Jitendra Singh was present at the launch ceremony. In his words, “This is truly a new beginning, a new dawn, a new beginning in the journey of India’s space program. This is a big step in India’s own rocket development and a turning point in the country’s startup movement. Skyroot has worked very well.”
