The pressure of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to expand his Council of Ministers is increasing. In the fifth year of his second term, four ministers have fallen short of the government. These include three cabinet ministers. This has increased work pressure on the current ministers. One minister has four ministries, while five ministers handle three ministries.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi began his second term with the new cabinet on 30 May 2019 after winning a major victory in the Lok Sabha elections last year. Along with Modi, 57 ministers were sworn in, including 24 cabinet ministers, nine ministers of state independent charge and 24 ministers of state. Since then, there has not been a single expansion or reshuffle of the government in the tenure of a quarter of a year. While four ministers have fallen short.
Resignations of two ministers, two died. In fact , two of BJP’s allies Shiv Sena and Akali Dal severed ties with the government and one cabinet minister each resigned from the government. Shiv Sena’s Arvind Sawant and Akali Dal’s Harsimrat Kaur Badal tendered their resignations. Now the post of another cabinet minister has become vacant after the demise of LJP leader Ram Vilas Paswan. Earlier, a post in the government was vacated by the death of Minister of State for Railways Suresh Angadi.
The work of some ministers has increased, due to which the workload has increased on some ministers. They have to handle many ministries simultaneously. Union Minister Narendra Singh Tomar has four ministries – Agriculture, Rural Development, Panchayati Raj and Consumer and Food. While five ministers Ravi Shankar Prasad, Dr. Harshvardhan, Piyush Goyal, Prahlad Joshi and Prakash Javadekar are handling three ministries. Roughly, there are about 70 ministers working in the government, and in the previous Modi government too, almost the same number of ministers were working.
Changes in the BJP organization will also have an effect, usually the cabinet is expanded and reshuffled in one year of government formation, but this time it has been more than a quarter of a year. Meanwhile, many things have changed due to corona infection and other changes have been made in the way of functioning. According to sources, the Union Council of Ministers is likely to expand and reshuffle after the Bihar Assembly elections. Recently after the arrival of new team of BJP organization, some BJP leaders are also likely to get a place in the government.
