Is the cheapest iPhone in India just a matter of time?

Tata iPhone Deals: Tata launches iPhone manufacturing in India The company is soon to acquire Apple’s production plant Wistron to manufacture iPhones in the country. According to sources, Tata is going to buy the manufacturing facility of Taiwanese company Wistron in India. Ratan Tata’s company will buy the facility at a huge price. It is reported that Tata is going to spend 612.6 million US dollars or about 5,000 crore rupees in Indian currency to buy the Wistron manufacturing facility in Taiwan. However, nothing has been officially announced by Apple’s Wistron and Tata in this regard. According to sources, Tata is going to acquire the Apple Wistron manufacturing plant in Karnataka.

Apple is set to acquire Wistron in a deal worth Rs 5,000 crore, according to a report by The Economic Times. And if it does materialize, Tata will be the first Indian company to manufacture the iPhone in the country, which has been in the hands of Taiwanese manufacturers until now — just like Wistron has been doing for so long. Then again there were companies like Foxconn and Pegatron. Incidentally, Wistron started manufacturing iPhones in India in 2017.

Earlier, a Bloomberg report had revealed that Tata was considering opening a joint electronics manufacturing unit to manufacture the iPhone in India in collaboration with Wistron. Apple currently has a total of three manufacturing units in India, namely Wistron, Pegatron, and Foxconn.

Apple recently announced that it will manufacture the newly launched iPhone 14 in India at Foxconn’s Sriperumbudur facility in Chennai. At the time, Apple said, “We are very happy to manufacture iPhone 14 in India. The new iPhone 14 lineup introduces groundbreaking new technologies and significant security capabilities.” For those who are not aware of the matter, it should be known that several series of iPhone models have been manufactured in India before — iPhone 13, iPhone 12, and iPhone SE.

Meanwhile, the production of the iPhone 14 Pro model has been greatly affected due to ongoing tensions at Apple’s Foxconn plant in Zhengzhou, China. More than 20,000 employees, including new hires, have walked out of Foxconn’s Zhengzhou plant in China a day after violent protests broke out, according to a recent report. The workers expressed their anger over the working conditions, which later turned into protests.

Foxconn offered to pay newly hired workers 10,000 yuan (US$1,400) to leave the plant to deal with the protests. According to a report by CNN, the company sent messages to employees urging them to return to their dormitories. The company also promised to pay 8,000 yuan if they agreed to leave Foxconn and another 2,000 yuan if they boarded a bus to leave the facility, the company said.
