ISRO chief K Sivan has said that Chandrayaan-3 is now expected to be launched in 2022 which was earlier scheduled to be launched in late 2020. The Kovid-19 lockdown has affected several projects of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), including Chandrayaan-3 and the country’s first manned space mission Gaganyaan. Chandrayaan-3 will not have an orbiter like its predecessors.

“We are working on it,” Sivan told PTI. It is similar to Chandrayaan-2, but will not have an orbiter. Only the orbiter sent with Chandrayaan-2 will be used for Chandrayaan-3. With this we are working on a system and most likely the launch will be in 2022 next year.

Chandrayaan-2 was launched on 22 July 2019 and it was sent to take off the ‘rover’ in the South Pole region of the Moon. However, Chandrayaan-2 lander Vikram did not succeed in making a soft landing on 7 September 2019 and India’s dream of achieving this success in the first attempt remained unfulfilled. Chandrayaan-3 is also an important mission for ISRO which will pave the way for India in interplanetary landings.

Sivan said that there is a plan to execute ISRO’s first unmanned mission in December this year under the Gaganyaan project, which was to be executed in December last year. He said that after this another unmanned mission will be carried out and then in the third time a manned mission will be carried out.

There are plans to send three Indians to space by 2022 under the Gaganyaan project. Four ‘test pilots’ have been selected for this mission, currently undergoing training in Russia. When asked about the launch of the third module-manned mission under the project, Sivan said, “Much technology demonstration is required. After testing that all technology is perfect, we will decide the launch time of the manned mission.
