Before the upcoming assembly elections in Puducherry, the Congress has been getting one stroke after another. After the recent resignation of several party MLAs, another MLA resigned on Sunday. Congress MLA K Lakshminarayanan submitted the resignation letter to Puducherry Assembly Speaker VP Shivakozhundu. Apart from this, DMK MLA K Venkatesan also resigned from the post of MLA. The Congress government of Puducherry has to give floor test in the assembly by 5 pm on 22 February.

After the resignation of Laxminarayanan, the number of Congress alliance has come down to 13 in Puducherry. Four-time Congress MLA Laxminarayanan has written in the resignation letter that he is angry at the party for not getting recognition. He also told that he will also leave the party.

Earlier, a senior BJP leader claimed on Friday that 3 more Congress MLAs were going to resign from the assembly. He insisted that Narayanasamy’s government would not be able to prove a majority in the assembly.

When asked if Surana, the vice-president in the Karnataka BJP, would fall in the majority test of the Congress government, he said, “Certainly, 100 per cent”. The BJP leader said, “I think, that is the only option”.

Assembly elections are due in Puducherry in April-May. However, before that on 22 February, the Congress government will have to prove its majority on the floor test. In the last one month, six Congress MLAs have left the party. In this way the state government has come in a minority. In the month of January, two MLAs – Namasivayam who held the Ministry of Public Work and E. Thipaidan resigned and went to Delhi to join the BJP. Another Congress MLA N Dhanavelu was expelled from the party in July last year for his alleged involvement in anti-party activities.

The Congress won 15 seats in the 2016 assembly elections held in Puducherry. The state Congress government had the support of three DMK and one Independent MLA. Former Chief Minister N. Rangasamy’s All India NR Congress has seven seats, while AIADMK won four seats. The BJP has three MLAs.

A 12-year-old girl was killed in a leopard attack in Sanjay Tiger Reserve in Sidhi district of Madhya Pradesh. Kadar Parouha, in-charge of the Marwas police chowki said that the deceased has been identified as Saroj Gond, she was a resident of Jhapari village and was the daughter of Shiv Narayan Singh Gond.

He said that the incident happened on Saturday in the forest near the Mavwas of Sanjay Tiger Sanctuary when she went to pick up wood for cooking with her mother and other women. Parouha said, “All these women were picking wood from a small distance in the forest.” Saroj’s mother was with him. Suddenly the leopard caught Saroj’s throat in the jaw and dragged it for about 200 meters. The women present there also tried to get rid of her by making noise, but by the time the leopard ran away from her, Saroj was dead.

He said that a case has been registered in the Mwas police post in this regard and the body has been handed over to the relatives after post-mortem.
