IND vs ENG: Indian cricket team’s star off spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has become the fourth Indian bowler to take 400 wickets in Test cricket. Ashwin also took the fastest 400 wickets after former Sri Lankan spinner Muttiah Muralitharan. 34-year-old Ashwin achieved this feat on the second day of the third Test match being played with England at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera.
Ashwin completed his 400 wickets in Test cricket by lbw to England batsman Joffra Archer. Before Ashwin, Kapil Dev, Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh have taken 400 wickets in Test cricket for India. Kumble has 619 wickets in 132 Tests, Kapil Dev has 343 wickets in 131 Tests and Harbhajan Singh has 417 wickets in 103 Tests.
Ashwin becomes the second fastest bowler to take 400 wickets
Also, Ashwin has become the second fastest bowler to take 400 wickets in world cricket. He has taken 400 wickets in a Test match in 77 matches at an average of 25.01 and an economy rate of 2.83. Next to them is Muttiah Muralitharan, former Sri Lankan spinner, who holds the record for the fastest 400 wickets. Muralitharan set this record in the 72nd Test against Zimbabwe in 2002 in Gaul. He was followed by Richard Hadley of New Zealand in 80 Tests and Dale Steyn of South Africa took 400 wickets in 80 Tests.
Ashwin completes 600 international wickets
With seven wickets in the Motera Test, Ashwin has 603 wickets in international cricket. He achieved this feat in the 234th match. Ashwin is the fourth bowler to do this for India. Before him Kapil Dev has 687 wickets, Harbhajan Singh 707 wickets and Anil Kumble 953 wickets.
Ashwin has 401 wickets in 77 Tests, 150 wickets in 111 ODIs and 52 wickets in 46 T20 Internationals. Ashwin has also become the fastest Indian to achieve this milestone.
