So far 141 people have been confirmed dead in a bridge accident in Gujarat’s Morbi on Sunday evening. However, political pressure has also started around this disaster. An old video of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech has been circulated on social media by the opposition, particularly the Trinamool Congress. The video was of the 2016 West Bengal Assembly election campaign. A few days before that, the post bridge collapsed in Kolkata’s post area. In the video, Narendra Modi taunted the incident of breaking the bridge as an ‘act of fraud’ or ‘the result of fraud’. After the collapse of the Morbi bridge, the opposition reminded the Prime Minister of that day.
Ahead of the 2016 assembly elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited West Bengal to campaign for the BJP. Addressing a public meeting at Madarihat in Alipurduar district, Modi said, “Such a big bridge collapsed, and what are they (the ruling party) saying? Saying it is Act of God. Sis, this is not the work of God, it is the work of deception. Act of Fraud. However, the bridge collapsing during the election is undoubtedly an act of God. This is why people know what kind of government you are running. This is God’s message to the people, today the bridge has broken and tomorrow Bengal will collapse.”
On March 31, 2016, the under-construction bridge collapsed near Posta. 27 people died. Prime Minister Modi came to Bengal for the election campaign in April. Apart from saying ‘Act of God, Mamata Banerjee blamed the collapse of that bridge on the shoulders of the Left. He argued that the agreement with the manufacturing company was made when the Left government was in power. Modi also criticized Mamata Banerjee’s move. The Prime Minister said, “As soon as he reached the accident site, he said that the Left had made these deals. Left or right, think first of those who died, sister! Respect the dead.” The Prime Minister said, if the construction of the flyover was completed successfully, then Mamata would have gladly cut the ribbon. He claimed credit for building the bridge. But, he now blames the left for its collapse.

This old video has gone viral on social media after Morbi Bridge collapsed. The opposition claims that the Prime Minister should hold the government of his own party accountable in the same way. Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendushekhar Roy tweeted, “Prime Minister Modi scolded Mamata Banerjee during flyover collapse in Kolkata. Drop a few drops of tears for the death of 132 people in the newly renovated bridge collapse in Gujarat yesterday.” But not only Trinamool Congress, Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi also tweeted about this old video.
