Antigua and Barbuda have revoked the citizenship granted to Mehul Choksi, the Punjab National Bank, who had been defamed by the Caribbean Nation’s Investment Program (CIP). Here, a UK court has ordered extradition of his partner-in-crime fugitive diamond trader Nirav Modi. Let me tell you that Mehul Choksi is the maternal uncle of Nirav Modi. Nirav Modi is also another prime accused in this alleged fraud case of over Rs 13,500 crore.

Recently Nirav Modi has lost his case against extradition. After this, India has said that after the decision of the UK court in Nirav Modi’s case, he will be contacted soon for his extradition. At present, the court has referred the matter to the home secretary there. Further conditions will depend on their approval. At present, it can get two months time for this. The Ministry of External Affairs responded in the matter saying that Nirav Modi is wanted in India in the Punjab National Bank fraud case. His extradition to Britain was sought in August 2018 at the request of CBI and ED.

Nirav Modi is lodged in London’s Wandsworth Jail. After the decision of Judge Samuel Gooji in London Court, the matter will now go to the UK Home Ministry. Home Minister Preeti Patel will put her final stamp on the court’s decision on extradition. After this, the process of bringing this wanted fugitive from India to Mumbai Jail will begin. However, he is unlikely to visit India immediately. After the court verdict, Nirav Modi will have the option of going to the upper court. He can appeal in the High Court against the verdict. Nirav has 28 days to appeal. After a setback from the High Court, he can go to the Human Rights Court. In addition to this he will have the option of going to European court talking about human rights.

Nirav Modi and his maternal uncle Mehul Choksi, along with bank officials, fraudulently loaned more than Rs 14,000 crore to Punjab National Bank. This fraud was done through a letter of guarantee. Two major cases of bank scam and money laundering in India have been registered by the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate. Apart from this, some other cases are also registered against him in India.

Nirav Modi, who is familiar with the diamond business, is originally from Gujarat. Her father was involved in the diamond trade and this was pursued by Nirav Modi. Nirav came into the limelight when the Golconda necklace of Nirav Modi’s company Fire Star Diamond sold for Rs 16.29 crore at auction in 2010. According to the 2016 Forbes list, Nirav, who owns property worth Rs 11,237 crore, was ranked 46th in the list of richest people in the country.
