The sudden meeting of the core group of Uttarakhand BJP has raised the political temperature of the state by giving vent to the speculation of some major changes in the state government. This meeting, held here on Saturday evening, was presided over by the BJP’s National Vice President and former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh. Singh was also present along with state in-charge of party affairs Dushyant Kumar Gautam. This meeting of the core group of the state unit was not already proposed and it was called at a time when the important budget session of the state assembly was going on in the new summer capital of the state, Garsain.
On receiving the information of the meeting, Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat had to return to Dehradun immediately from Garsain. Soon after the budget was passed, the session was also terminated indefinitely and BJP MLAs were also summoned from Gairsain to Dehradun immediately.
Rajya Sabha MP Naresh Bansal, Lok Sabha MP from Tehri, Mala Rajyalakshmi Shah, former Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna, Lok Sabha MP from Nainital, Ajay Bhatt, State President Banshidhar Bhagat, Cabinet Minister Madan Kaushik at the core group meeting for more than two hours. Important leaders of the party were also present.
Party sources said that Raman Singh had separate talks with every member present in the core group meeting. Later Raman Singh also went to the Chief Minister’s official residence where about 40 MLAs of the party were present. After the core group meeting, Singh also went to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s office.
Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank was also supposed to attend the core group meeting but for some reason he could not reach. However, before Raman Singh returned to Delhi, Nishank met him at Jolly Grant Airport. Such a rapid development fueled speculation of a leadership change in the state.
However, when asked in this regard, Banshidhar Bhagat said, “This meeting was called on 18 March to discuss the programs to be held in 70 assembly constituencies to mark the completion of four years of the state government.” Said that there is no possibility of change of leadership in the state and there is no estrangement among the party MLAs. However, party sources said that nothing can be said for sure about this.
