Himachal Pradesh Congress has spoken of launching a protest across the state against the removal of the foundation stone of Sonia Gandhi’s name from the Atal tunnel. A complaint has also been lodged with the police in this regard.
This tunnel of strategic importance connects Manali to Lahaul Spiti. This tunnel, about 9 km long, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 3 October this month.
The Congress says that party president Sonia Gandhi laid the foundation stone on June 28, 2010 at the South Portal of Rohtang Tunnel Project in Dhundi. The Congress has expressed its displeasure over the laying of the foundation stone of Sonia Gandhi’s name.
Lahaul and Spiti Congress President Gyalachan Thakur have lodged a complaint at Keylong Police Station. According to Thakur, removing the foundation stone is undemocratic and is a mischief of BJP leaders. Lahaul and Spiti Mahila Congress president Shashi Kiran have also condemned the incident. Manali Block Congress President Harichand Sharma said that the inauguration of the Atal tunnel was confined to the people of BJP.
The Congress has warned that if the lost foundation stone is not laid at its original place in 15 days, then protests will be started across the state.
Himachal Congress chief Kuldeep Rathore has written a letter to Chief Minister Jairam Thakur in this regard. Rathore has said in the letter that removing the foundation stone is illegal and has demanded action against those who do so.
The decision to build a strategic tunnel in Rohtang Pass in Himachal Pradesh was taken on June 3, 2000, when the Prime Minister of the country was Atal Bihari Vajpayee. In his honor, in 2019, the Union Cabinet decided to name the Rohtang Tunnel Project as Atal Tunnel.
