Sehwag spread his power across all three formats and won matches for India by playing several brilliant innings, but his biggest contribution is considered to be bringing excitement to the start of Test cricket. The new ball is considered the most dangerous ball in cricket and there are two ways to make the ball old, drop it or hit it. Sehwag tried another method and turned it into a philosophy.
Whenever Sehwag’s records are talked about, he is first called the ‘Sultan of Multan’. During the tour of Pakistan in 2004, Sehwag played a memorable inning of 309 runs in Multan. He became the first batsman to score a triple century for India.
Sehwag scored the Multan triple-century in just 364 balls. But, 4 years later he scored the fastest triple century and created a world record. Sehwag scored a triple century in just 278 balls against South Africa. He was dismissed for 319 runs. 198 runs came from 47 balls with the help of 42 fours and 5 sixes.
With these innings, Sehwag became the third batsman in the world to score two triple centuries in Test cricket. Only Don Bradman and Brian Lara could do this feat before him. After that Chris Gayle also inscribed his name on this special list.
Sehwag created a world record not only in Tests but also in ODIs. He became the second batsman after Sachin Tendulkar to score a double century in this format. Sehwag scored 219 against West Indies in Indore in December 2019.
Sehwag played a key role in India winning the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup. In his long career, Sehwag scored 8586 runs (23 centuries, 32 fifties) in 104 Tests, 8273 runs (15 centuries, 38 fifties) in 251 ODIs, and 394 runs (2 fifties) in 19 T20s. Apart from this, Sehwag contributed as a part-time off-break bowler by taking 40 wickets in Tests and 96 wickets in ODIs.
