Attacks On Sub-Tribals In Meghalaya, Karimganj BJP Seeks Union Home Ministry’s Intervention: Karimganj (Assam), November 1 (H.S.): The Karimganj district BJP has sought the intervention of the Central Home Ministry to take action against the tribals who attacked the non-tribals on October 28 in Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya.
The Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) took out a march in Shillong on October 28 afternoon demanding more job opportunities in the state. Shillong, the capital city of Meghalaya, became violent due to the attack of some members participating in the procession. Many non-tribal pedestrians were injured in the mass attack by those tribal youths participating in the procession. Besides, several scooter-motor bikes and four-wheelers were damaged.
After that incident, there was a storm of protests in Assam’s Barak Valley. Krishnaendu Pal, MLA of Patharkandi under Karimganj district, demanded an investigation into the incident by the National Investigation Agency on Monday. In this regard, he has also sent a letter with demands to the Chief Minister of Assam. On the other hand, Meghalaya Police Chief (DGP) said yesterday. Working President of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee and North Karimganj MLA Kamalaksh De Purkayastha demanded a proper investigation of the incident after meeting Lazzaram Bishnoi.
But not only in Assam, the protest is also in Meghalaya. The Meghalaya Tourism Development Forum (MTDF) demanded swift action against the culprits involved in the violence in Shillong. MDF chairman Larsing Swan said, ‘Confidence in law and order needs to be restored. The public of the state must be assured that such acts of breaking law and order and disrupting peace and harmony will not be tolerated. Such tragedies are very harmful to the state, those involved in the barbaric incident are the biggest enemies of Meghalaya, they have insulted the people of the state.
Meanwhile, Karimganj BJP leaders strongly condemned the incident on Tuesday. They sought the intervention of the Union Home Minister to ensure the safety of the tribals, seeking an investigation into the entire incident. Chief Minister of Assam Dr. A memorandum containing the same demand has also been sent to Himantaviswa Sharma today. On Tuesday, Karimganj district BJP leaders handed over the memorandum to Karimganj Additional District Commissioner Vipulkumar Das.
The certificate was signed by district BJP president Subrata Bhattacharya, former MLA Missionranjan Das, Krishna Das, Dilipkumar Das, Nirmal Vanik, Nishikant Bhattacharya, Sudhanshu Das, Kishore Dey, Amit Pal, Sukhendu Das, Pappu Kuri, and others.
A copy of the memorandum sent through the Additional District Magistrate has been sent to the Union Home Minister, Meghalaya Chief Minister, and DGP. Requesting to take necessary steps, the memorandum said that the unpleasant incident that happened in Shillong on October 28 is highly condemnable. Innocent non-tribal people were attacked by tribals. As a result, the people of the non-tribal community are living in fear.
They wrote that this is not the first incident of inhumane violence against non-tribal people in Meghalaya. Tribals have long faced such violence. Karimganj district has reacted widely to the recent incident. In this situation, Bengali, Assamese, Punjabi, Marwari, and Bihari are suffering from insecurity to live in Meghalaya. Therefore, in the greater interest of the people of the entire northeastern region of India, the immediate intervention of the Assam and Central Governments in this matter has been sought in the memorandum.
